Health Scare at Richmond International Airport

New information: Henrico Fire and airport officials have told NBC12 Ebola has been ruled out in this case.
A health scare is underway at Richmond International Airport in Henrico.

A passenger on board American Airlines Flight 2984 from Chicago tells NBC12 the plane sat on the tarmac for more than an hour. That passenger says the pilot told them they were operating under their Ebola protocol because a mother and her two children had to be taken off the plane.

We're told a teen passenger had a high fever and abdominal pain. The family began its trip in Nigeria before eventually making their way to Chicago and finally to Richmond.

Airport spokesman Troy Bell says the airport had advanced notice from the flight en-route to Richmond, so medical officials were prepared when they landed around 6:53 p.m. The woman and her two children were taken off the plane in masks. Witnesses say several ambulances and people in hazmat suits were seen outside of the plane.

Given the symptoms, they don't think there is a high risk to the other passengers. Passengers were released shortly after 8 p.m.

Chicago is one of the five pre-screening airports for Ebola -- but Nigeria is not one of the country's on the list of concern.
